The Impact of Semantic Neighborhood Density on Semantic Access

چکیده
Theories of word recognition agree that multiple word candidates are activated and compete for recognition when a word is read or heard. Orthographic and phonological density metrics have provided significant, but partial, accounts of this activation and competition process. We extend this approach to examine the impact of semantic neighborhood density on visual semantic access. We compare measures of semantic neighborhood density derived from three distinct semantic representations: elicited features, associations, and text-based co-occurrence measures and examine whether embellishments such as frequency-weighting and distinctiveness-weighting improve measures of semantic neighborhood density. According to some metrics, responses are faster and more accurate in dense semantic neighborhoods, but other metrics show exactly the opposite pattern. We propose that distant neighbors facilitate semantic access but near neighbors inhibit semantic access.

A combination of semantic and attribute-based access control model for virtual organizations
A Virtual Organization (VO) consists of some real organizations with common interests, which aims to provide inter organizational associations to reach some common goals by sharing their resources with each other. Providing security mechanisms, and especially a suitable access control mechanism, which enforces the defined security policy is a necessary requirement in VOs. Since VO is a complex ...
متن کاملThe Impact of Semantic Clustering on Iranian EFL Advanced Learners’ Vocabulary Retention
This study investigated the impact of semantic clustering on Iranian EFL learners’ vocabulary retention at advanced level. Participants were female learners randomly assigned to two groups of 15. Four instruments (TOEFL test; vocabulary pretest; immediate posttest, and delayed recall posttest) were used. The experimental group underwent semantic clustering vocabulary presentation in which the l...
متن کاملPreferred Lexical Access Route in Persian Learners of English: Associative, Semantic or Both
Background: Words in the Mental Lexicon (ML) construct semantic field through associative and/ or semantic connections, with a pervasive native speaker preference for the former. Non-native preferences, however, demand further inquiry. Previous studies have revealed inconsistent Lexical Access (LA) patterns due to the limitations in the methodology and response categorization. Objectives: To f...
